TITLE:    Cloud Solutions Architect
PERFORMANCE COACH:     Mgr Enterprise Architecture

POSITION CONCEPT 
The Cloud Solutions Architect is responsible for leading the creation of a cloud technology architecture framework and providing technical leadership in support of the organizations initiatives in cloud computing by leveraging cloud services and automation and ensuring public and private cloud services and solutions are architected and designed optimally for cost, functionality, reliability and resiliency. Responsible for implementation and delivery of the organization’s cloud computing strategy along with the introduction of new emerging technologies and public cloud services, cloud application design, and cloud management and monitoring strategies. Work with development teams and other stakeholders and provide architecture leadership and best practices and drive and enable the migration and refactoring of on-premises applications to cloud native design and deployment methodologies. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
1.    Cloud Architecture and Design and Development (50%)
a)    Manage the development and implementation of cloud strategy. 
b)    Define cloud standards, DevOps, Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) tool chain and Standard Operating Environment (SOE)
c)    Define, implement, and enforce the cloud standard operating environment, cloud standards, and associated tools/platforms/frameworks for the organization’s application portfolio, in coordination with IT-wide efforts and Technology Architecture and Planning
d)    Drive Proof-of-Concepts and implementation, with hands-on involvement as SME, for new SOE items: build deployment automation pipelines, build automated next gen CI/CD pipelines partnering with development teams, build and integrate new technologies like containers enabling multi-cloud and preventing cloud provider lock-in
e)    Define and enforce Cloud architecture best practices: availability; redundancy schemes, performance, Disaster Recovery, DB, and Interfacing Systems, etc.
f)    Develop a library of deployable and documented cloud design patterns, based on the organization’s application portfolio, as a basis for deploying services to the cloud
g)    Demonstrate leadership ability to back decisions with research and the “why,” and articulate several options, the pros and cons for each, and a recommendation
h)    Develop solutions architecture and evaluate architectural alternatives for private, public and hybrid cloud models, including IaaS, PaaS, and other cloud services
i)    Define optimal design patterns and solutions for high availability and disaster recovery for applications and that are appropriate for business and technology strategies

2.    Project Support (40%)
a)    Ensure delivered solutions meet/perform to technical and functional/non-functional requirements
b)    Provide technical expertise and ownership in the diagnosis and resolution of an issue, including the determination and provision of workaround solution or escalation to service owners
c)    Ensure delivered solutions are realized in time frame committed; work in conjunction with Business and Application Development to size and manage scope and risk as well as regularly communicate project health and identifies risks to project and program stakeholders, sponsors and management
d)    Provide support and technical governance, expertise related to cloud architectures, deployment, and operation
b)    Act as a Subject Matter Expert to the organization for the organizations cloud end-to-end architecture, including SAP, Azure platforms etc. networking, provisioning, and management


3.    Thought Leadership (10%)
a)    Provide thought leadership in industry and to fellow team members and leaders across business and technical project dimensions solving complex business requirements
b)    Demonstrate forward thinking around where the organization is going and how technology can support these efforts
c)    Proactively Advocate and define cloud architecture vision from a strategic perspective, including internal and external platforms, tools, and systems
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         
SUPERVISION
Direct Supervision:    No direct reports. 
    
Indirect Supervision:         Responsible for resource management, staff augmentation, and vendor relationships and ensures adequate support for all assigned work activities.  Development of staff and Architects.  May serve as a backup to management. 

 

RELATIONSHIPS
Key Internal:      IT Architects, IT Strategic Planning, Development Staff of various business application towers, Project Management Office, Other IT and Business Stakeholders etc. 
Key External:     Consultants (System Integrators, Offshore Teams), Contractors, Customers, Vendors.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Education 
Required:    Bachelor’s degree in Information, Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems, or related field.

Licenses/Certifications
Preferred:    At least one professional certification in specific job-related disciplines.

 

Direct Experience  
Required:    7 years of direct work experience performing, or closely related, to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position spanning at least two IT disciplines, including technical architecture, network and storage management, software application solution architecture, design or development, middleware, database management and/or operations.
3 years of experience with cloud technologies and platforms such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
Preferred:      Gas or Electric utility experience
Experience working in large public or private-sector organizations 

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)
Required:    
•    Deep understanding of cloud computing technologies, business drivers and emerging computing trends
•    Ability to interact with and provide architectural design guidance to project teams made up of employee and/or supplier resources
•    Knowledge and Understanding of Cloud Native Development such as 
o    Micro Services architecture
o    Containerization (Kubernetes, Docker etc.)
o    Automation Framework and Tools (RPA, Low Code etc.)
•    Relevant Design and Development experience
o    Creating Architecture/Design documents (HLD/LLD) with models, system diagrams.
•    Hands-on Experience with Azure Cloud platform implementation 
•    Excellent listening skills as well as the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in written form with a wide variety of audiences.

Preferred:    
•    Demonstrated knowledge of Electric Grid Solutions and/or Gas Utility Operations. 
•    Ability to assess emerging business & regulatory changes and articulate how these can positively impact the Company.
•    Knowledge of enterprise platforms and operating systems as well as knowledge of key business applications, functions, and processes.
