POSITION CONCEPT
This position is responsible for the preparation of the income tax provision and federal and state income tax returns along with the associated tax research and tax planning for various Emera US subsidiaries.
 

Senior Tax Analyst

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Primary responsibilities include the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual tax provision ASC 740 workpapers, analytics, roll forwards, and ASC 740 tax basis balance sheet reconciliation, and other related calculations.
  • Responsible for the preparation of annual income tax budgets, forecast and strategic plans of assigned subsidiaries for both federal and state taxes, including current and deferred taxes, projection of book to tax differences, and expected cash flow from tax payments.
  • Responsible for assisting with the preparation of annual income tax returns, including the preparation of associated workpapers and true ups.
  • Responsible for preparing all tax requests related to regulatory activities, including preparation of minimum filing requirements (MFRs) and interrogatory responses for rate case submissions. Assist in researching tax, financial and regulatory tax issues.

 
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and/or Finance from an accredited college
Preferred: Master’s degree in Taxation
Experience:
Required: Minimum of 5 years work experience at a public accounting firm or corporate tax department
Preferred:1 years of regulated utility tax work experience
Licenses/Certifications:
Preferred: Certified Public Accountant
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Required:

  • Knowledge of federal and state corporate tax law
  • US tax compliance and fixed assets/depreciation experience
  • Advanced knowledge of tax accounting principles (ASC 740/FAS109).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office with proficiency in Excel
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills with critical attention to detail

Preferred:

  • Experience with software systems such as SAP, PowerPlan PowerTax/Tax Provision, OneSource Income Tax, Checkpoint
  • Experience with GAAP and tax regulated concepts such as ASC 980 Regulated Operations,special regulated utilities tax issues such as normalization, book/tax differences for public utilities.

 

Tax Analyst II
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Preparation of monthly journal entries to record income taxes, prepare income tax provisions to support the journal entries, and maintenance of monthly analyses of tax related accounts. Prepare tax schedules related to annual reports.
  • Preparation of income tax forecasts and budgets, both federal and state, including the current and deferred P&L impact, cash flow from tax payments and balance sheet presentations.
  • Preparation of work papers and supporting documents for the preparation of federal and state income tax returns for Emera US and affiliated companies.
  • Preparation of regulatory schedules, including minimum filing requirement schedules (MFRs) and responses to rate case interrogatories.
  • Performs special assignments as may be requested by Senior Tax department personnel as needed.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Required: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college with a major in Accounting and/or Finance required.
Experience
Required: Minimum of 3 years of direct work experience performing the Duties & Responsibilities of this position. Experience consists of work in public accounting or private industry working primarily in corporate tax.
Preferred: One or more years of experience in a capital intensive industry.
Licenses/certifications:
Preferred: Certified Public Accountant
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)
Required:

  • Intermediate knowledge of U.S. GAAP
  • Knowledge of tax law and understanding of accounting for income taxes principles (ASC740/FAS109)
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office with proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Self-motivated and detail oriented
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Organized

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of software systems such as SAP, Power Plan, OneSource Income Tax, Checkpoint

Tax Analyst I:

  • Assist in the preparation of work papers and supporting documents for the preparation of federal and state income tax returns for Emera US and affiliated companies.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Ability to perform under stress to meet deadlines. Overtime required during various times throughout the year such as – during tax return compliance, during month end, quarterly and annual SEC reporting, and regulatory activities.
