Tampa Electric and its sister companies serve a role in providing critical services to our community during an emergency. Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our Tampa Electric customers. Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with the company's rules and procedures.

Responding to storms will be considered a condition of employment.

POSITION CONCEPT: 
The Superintendent of Generation is responsible in a line capacity to the Manager of Operations for the leadership of all assigned operating and maintenance personnel. The incumbent is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of plant equipment and systems; including NERC compliance, environmental compliance, water management, team work assignments, and PM completion, to ensure an optimum and professional response to his customer’s (Energy Control Center) power needs. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • LEADERSHIP: Supervise and give daily direction to their assigned personnel. Coach and foster an environment of open communication with employees. Conduct regular performance reviews. Utilize company tools to develop employee performance and skills. Ensure safe work practices and station safety programs are followed. Ensure Corporate / Department (ES) / Station Policies are understood and practiced. Maintain and provide leadership toward attainment of company and station goals.
  • OPERATIONAL BEST PRACTICES: Support opportunities for improvement created by Operational Excellence Programs; ownership of area assignments, leadership required for successful implementation of new strategies (i.e. 3-way communication, electronic logs, enhanced / electronic rounds, turn-overs, etc…) 
  • COMMUNICATION: Ensure complete communication with the previous shift Superintendent on plant status, equipment problems, load restrictions, and reliability issues. Keep Energy Control personnel, duty personnel, plant management, plant management, engineering and technical staff updated on equipment problems, system restrictions, return to service estimates and reliability issues. Complete turn-over logs, unusual incident reports, incident (safety / environmental) reports, CEM malfunction documentation and daily capability report.  
  • SAFETY / ENVIRONMENTAL: Ensure Safe Work Practices and Station Safety Programs are followed. Respond to emergencies such as personnel injuries, fires, ammonia release, bomb threats, etc.  Follow documented policies and procedures to notify the appropriate personnel depending on emergency. Possess and utilize a complete understanding of HEC (LOTO) Procedures, Confined Space Procedures, Hot Work (Burn) Procedures, process hazards and the impact of plant personnel and equipment.
  • Using sound judgment and experience, make timely decisions and give clear direction under stressful situations to maintain the safety of plant personnel and equipment.  In addition, Possess and utilize a thorough understanding of unit operating procedures and be able to perform successful startups and shutdowns. Should have solid plant process knowledge to troubleshoot problems and articulate in a professional manner to fellow team mates and subordinates.
  • Make recommendations on equipment, budget and plant requirements.  Also, perform any other duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION:
Required: A valid high school diploma or valid GED

 

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Minimum of 15 years of direct work experience in the operations and / or maintenance of an electric generating facility. A minimum of 5 years in the operation of an electrical generating facility.
Preferred: 5 years natural gas combined cycle operation experience

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Required: Working knowledge of combined cycle generation. Understanding of the concept of “Operational Best Practices”.  Knowledge of Safe Work Practices including HEC Procedure requirements.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 
Must be able to work rotating (Modified DuPont) 12 hour shifts (nights, weekend), including scheduled and unscheduled overtime as well as holidays. Position requires frequent travel into plant. Exposure to plant conditions is required. Utilizing proper PPE will be required.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS: 
Must be physically able to navigate through plant structure; including ascending / descending stairs (multiple levels).
Must pass HAZMAT Physical Exam.

The successful applicant will be required to take and pass a Baseline Medical Examination as part of the pre-employment screening once an offer has been accepted. A pre-employment drug screening, as well as a background check (including education, employment, criminal and motor vehicle) will also be conducted as part of the pre-employment screening.
