The TECO Energy Internship & Cooperative Education Program offers college degree-seeking students the opportunity for professional growth while meeting the business needs of the company. The program is an extension of the educational process, providing practical experience to complement formal classroom work. The co-op program recruits students from colleges to give them an opportunity to work in a professional environment related to their field of study.
Position Summary/Details:
Operations engineering group is responsible for establishing a high standard of service to all customers by maintaining and improving the reliability of the electrical distribution system within the service area, and for the utilization of sound engineering practices to determine the most efficient, cost-effective engineering design to serve Customer needs.
The student would complete designs for maintenance work requests, perform fuse coordination studies, and assist on circuit patrols.
Accountabilities:
- Create and/or process work requests in work management software.
- Estimate electrical loads for customers and determine actual or proposed field measurements.
- Model proposed designs with the appropriate software to meet customer needs and ensure all results follow respective regulatory requirements.
- Assist operations engineer in maintaining system reliability through installations of reliability equipment (ACR and Trip Savers). Perform line patrols and infrared equipment inspections.
- Assist operations engineer in maintaining circuit protection/coordination within the service area.
- Produce construction prints for field construction of proposed designs.
Physical Location of Co-op: Western Service Area (WSA) 5402 W Sligh Ave Tampa, FL 33634
Working Conditions: Mostly in a normal office environment, a successful candidate will visit the field approximately weekly. This will include riding in a company vehicle on-road and off-road, walking on uneven surfaces, and entering substations.
Preferred Availability: Part – Time (20-30 hours)

Education:
The successful applicant should be enrolled in an ABET accredited university as a college undergraduate or a graduate level post-secondary educational program in a related discipline.
Co-Op Requirements:
- To qualify as a co-op student, enrollment in the university’s co-op program (proof of enrollment required); if not eligible for co-op program (or program unavailable), the student will be considered an intern.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is required
