This position can be hired with two different titles:

  • Renewable System Operator
  • Senior Renewable System Operator

 

POSITION CONCEPT 

 

The Renewable System Operator (RSO) is responsible for monitoring and controlling TEC Solar & Energy Storage generating units and acknowledging and responding to alarms. Responsible for analyzing, coordinating, dispatching and documenting trouble alarms and switching tasks.  Responsible for using independent judgment to responsibly direct field personnel to respond to system problems and requests within Tampa Electric’s renewable systems. Acts as the Generator Operator and performs functions in compliance with all applicable North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and TEC Open Access Transmission Tariff (OATT) requirements.

 

RENEWABLE SYSTEM OPERATOR

Performs complex technical assignments. Has decision-making responsibility requiring discretion and independent judgment with limited direction from the Manager, Renewables Control Center. 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Monitor, schedule and control the Solar & Energy Storage renewables system status and alarms including solar curtailment. (20%)
  2. For energized work, issue Solar Array Circuit’s Energized Work Permits that have been requested by Journey Solar Technician or Solar Contractor personnel and document any Energized Work Permits issued. (20%)
  3. For de-energized work, issue lower voltage side of the substation GSU clearances that have been requested by an Authorized Solar Ops, Substation, or Solar Contractor personnel and document any issued and released clearances. (20%)
  4. Use Ignition SCADA system information, Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), Energy Management System (EMS), and other resources to analyze and diagnosis issues, and responsibly direct field team members with information to resolve. (10%)
  5. Document results of field visits to troubleshoot and report all unusual electrical system issues to the Manager, Electrical Operations Solar and/or the Senior Engineer, Solar Operations. (10%)
  6. Plan and coordinate Solar crews as needed to resolve system problems during normal & abnormal hours and storm conditions. (10%)
  7. Communicate with Solar & Energy Storage Leadership and Engineering the daily renewables forecast and actuals availability and maintain renewable circuit maps. (10%)

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education 

Required: High school diploma or GED.

Preferred: Related college, technical degree, line worker or substation electrician is preferred.

 

Experience

Required: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering with 1 year experience in an electric utility or Minimum of two (2) years of experience performing the duties and responsibilities similar to one of the following: a Tampa Electric Energy Control Room Operator, Energy System Operator, Distribution System Operator, Journeyman Lineworker, Troubleshooter, Substation Electrician, Solar Technician, Combined Cycle Specialist, IGCC Process Specialist, Cable Splicer, Distribution Design Technician, or Planner/Scheduler

Preferred: Experience with computer applications such as EMS, Workman, CAD, GIS and WorkPro.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)

Required:  

  • Working knowledge of Tampa Electric or similar electric renewables system
  • Must have demonstrated success in operating Ignition, ADMS or EMS applications
  • Demonstrated initiative and independence in work assignments and potential for assuming greater responsibilities
  • Knowledge/ability in originating and issuing distribution, substation, and load transfer switching.

Preferred:  

  • Strong working knowledge of renewables generation and electric underground and overhead switching.

 

SENIOR RENEWABLE SYSTEM OPERATOR

Acting independently, performs all duties and responsibilities of RSO without restriction. Provide work direction to other RSO(s).

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Perform Duties & Responsibilities of the RSO. Provide leadership in the Renewables Control Center directing all operations, monitoring and diagnostic work. (40%)
  2. Responsible for continuous improvement and training support of new RSO(s). (20%)
  3. Write and issue required solar and energy storage switching requests. (20%)
  4. Provide directions to the RSO for issuing solar and energy storage switching and energized work permit instructions and review other RSO switching. (10%)
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by the Manager Renewables Control Center or Renewables Operations Engineer. Assist other complex Grid Modernization Projects, assignments and studies as needed. (10%)

 

Education 

Required: High school diploma or GED.

Required: Minimum of five years of experience in an electric utility performing the duties and responsibilities similar to a Tampa Electric Renewable System Operator.

SUPERVISION

Direct Supervision: No direct reports.

Indirect Supervision: Coordinate with the Solar Technician Personnel as needed to restore generation and/or resolve system problems.

 

RELATIONSHIPS

Key Internal: Directly reports to, and has daily contact with the Manager, Renewables Control Center. Has daily contact with other RSOs, DSOs, ESOs, Supervisors, Mgr. Solar Operations, Solar Generation Planners, field employees, Substation Operations, Substation Engineering, Transmission and IT. Has frequent contact with the Mgr. Electrical Operations Solar, Operations Engineer and Risk Management.

Key External: Frequent communication with Emergency Agencies, and TEC utility contractors.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Must work a rotating schedule which covers 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.  Significant overtime is required. Job is performed indoors in an office environment. Must be able to work in high stress situations.  Must be available to work extended Storm assignments.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS

Position requires working extended hours and shifts can involve more than five consecutive days crossing over pay periods.
