Title: Mechanic I or II Facility Svc - Gen

POSITION CONCEPT: 
This position is responsible for constructing, erecting, finishing and repairing wooden and metal structures and fixtures.  Performs advanced skilled carpentry duties in the construction, maintenance, and remodeling of buildings, facilities, and equipment.  This position requires the individual to work independently with minimal supervision to accomplish the assigned work. Ensures all completed work complies with Safe Work Practices.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Erect frameworks (wood and metal) for walls, floors and suspended ceilings.
  • Proficiently read and interpret blueprints. 
  • Plan and layout complex carpentry projects.
  • Estimate costs of material and labor.
  • Layout, form, pours and finishes multiple complex concrete foundations and structures.
  • Install metal and wood windows and doors.
  • Install door hardware, including locks, closures, hinges, and stops.
  • Operates and perform preventative maintenance on hand and power saws, planers, lathes, joiners, shapers, drills, sanders and a variety of hand tools.
  • Operate a backhoe, bobcat, and other heavy equipment as required (within one year of hiring).
  • May be required to multi-skill in other Facility Service trades of same or lower level. 
  • Overtime is required.


EDUCATION:
Required: High School diploma or equivalency.

 

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Must have completed and received certification through a State accredited Carpentry Vocational/Technical program or received a Union Journeyman Carpentry card and must also have 3-4 years of verifiable General Trades I or II journeyman-level commercial carpentry experience; or, the education, certification and/or completion of a credentialed union training program in carpentry may be substituted with 10 (ten) years or more of recent (within the last 15 (fifteen) years) General Trades I or II journeyman-level verifiable job-related commercial construction experience or equivalent work experience in the U.S. armed forces as follows:

 

  • Lead work activities of self and others on large commercial construction sites.
  • Plan, layout, determine material requirements, follow construction drawings and written specifications for complex carpentry projects.
  • Construction of all types of wall systems.
  • Commercial construction experience to layout, form, pours and finishes multiple complex concrete foundations and structures.
  • Operation of commercial construction equipment such as backhoes, small front-end loaders, trailer-mounted air-compressors, etc.
  • Operation and minor maintenance of all types of hand and powered tools.
  • Installing wood and metal doors and windows. 
  • Maintenance of all types of commercial building finishes interior and exterior. 

 

Must have a valid Florida Driver License (Class “A” CDL) or valid Florida Driver License with an employment agreement that a full (written and driver portion) Class “A” CDL will be obtained within the first year of employment to remain in the job.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Required

  • Basic knowledge of electrical, plumbing and HVAC construction practices.
  • Must have working knowledge of commercial building codes.
  • Must be able to proficiently read and interpret blueprints. 
  • Ability to plan and layout complex carpentry projects.
  • Ability to estimate costs of material and labor.
  • Able to layout, form, pour and finish multiple complex concrete foundations and structures.
  • Ability to operate a backhoe, bobcat, and other heavy equipment as required within one year of hiring.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Overtime work and emergency call out work is required according to a collective bargaining agreement and department work rules.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS:
1.    Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
2.    Must be able to work extended time periods in hot, dusty, noisy commercial and industrial environments.
3.    Must be able to tolerate heights, confined spaces and be able to walk stairs in buildings and structures for extended time periods and where there are no elevators.
