Tampa Electric and its sister companies serve a role in providing critical services to our community during an emergency. Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our Tampa Electric customers. Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with the company's rules and procedures.

POSITION CONCEPT

Provides leadership in the areas of Transmission Engineering and Construction Management including: timely and cost effective design of new installations, all relocations/rebuilds, and the engineering of items identified from the maintenance programs as requested.  Responsible for all aspects of the department’s operation, accountable for ensuring adherence to all company policies and operating requirements and for the safety, supervision, and development of a staff of more than nine professional, technical, and support team members, as well as indirect supervision of various contracted employees. 

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Oversight of approximately $423M in electric assets; accountable for the preparation and execution of $255K O&M budget, and $850K Capital budget.  (10%)
  2. Provide the selection, supervision, training, development, motivation, and compensation of supervisory, technical, and administrative staff necessary to carry out the function of the department.  (10%)
  3. Manage the transmission engineering function to ensure reliable, cost effective designs that comply with all codes and standards that govern transmission lines in Florida (e.g. the National Electric Safety Code, the standards of the Florida Public Service Commission, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, City of Tampa, Hillsborough County and other federal, state and local agencies as applicable).  (50%)
  4. Provide transmission technical design analysis, engineering support, and consultation for Tampa Electric Company and facilitate the development, assessment, and enforcement of standard transmission design criteria and practices.  (10%)
  5. Provide technical expertise in support of obtaining necessary permits required to site new transmission facilities including participating in community meetings.  (10%)
  6. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director – Transmission & System Operations.  (10%)

 

SUPERVISION

Direct Supervision: Engineers, Sr Transmission Specialist, Transmission Engineer Designer Drafters, Contractor Support Analyst

Indirect Supervision: GIS Technicians

 

RELATIONSHIPS

Key Internal: Contact with professional and paraprofessional personnel at levels ranging from senior management to entry level.  All Electric Delivery operations and engineering departments, Project Management, General Accounting, Budgets, Stores, Corporate Communications, Customer Service, Environmental Planning, Telecommunications, Real Estate, Risk Management, Legal Services, Human Resources, and Regulatory Affairs.

Key External: Interacts with state, county, and municipal officials, environmental permitting agency representatives, developers and their agents, architectural and engineering firms, gas/water/communication utilities, home owners associations, customers, other governmental agencies, contractors, transmission equipment manufacturers and vendors and others as necessary. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education

Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Civil, Industrial, Mechanical or Chemical) from an ABET accredited college of engineering

Preferred: An advanced degree in Civil Engineering

 

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred: Professional Engineer (PE) in Florida

 

Related Experience

Required: Minimum of 6 years professional-level experience successfully fulfilling progressively more complex roles and assignments in a utility engineering/operations environment 

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)

Required: Demonstrated proficiency in the management of financial and personnel resources; critical thinking; analytical decision making

Preferred: A thorough understanding of engineering, construction, and operation of transmission systems; Systems analysis, and system evaluation.
