POSITION CONCEPT


Performs all aspects of constructing and maintaining Tampa Electric’s Network, Underground Commercial Distribution (UCD), and Underground Residential Distribution (URD) Systems, including switching, troubleshooting and operating equipment and vehicles.  Must perform all duties following Safe Work Practices and Procedures set forth by the company. The scope of this position shall include those responsibilities defined in Exhibit “A” of the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or the IBEW Intent Book where the position is at a lesser rate of pay.  

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.    Construct and maintain Tampa Electric’s downtown Network, Spot Networks, UCD, URD and downtown lighting systems.  

2.    Install, remove or repair the following distribution equipment on energized or de-energized lines in all types of weather conditions:    
3.    All pad mounted equipment including single phase and three phase transformers, switch-gear, UG Cap-Banks and LBC cabinets, installing secondary hand-holes and cabinets, protectors, conductors (primary and secondary, single phase to three phase) which also includes PILC.
4.    Must demonstrate the ability to perform all aspects of 13kv paper-lead splicing & terminations.
5.    Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on Network, UCD, and URD equipment.
6.    Utilize voltmeters, phase rotation meters, phasing tools, meggars, capacitance test meters, cable fault locating equipment, protector testing equipment, oil testing equipment and other related equipment as needed.
7.    Set and remove meters and take readings.
8.    Switch, tag, test and ground Network, UCD, URD and overhead systems as well as perform some substation switching.
9.    Climb ladders and other structures using appropriate safety equipment.
10.    Drive and operate equipment related to the job that requires a Commercial Driver License (CDL).
11.    Respond to emergency and scheduled overtime.
12.    Know environmental rules concerning asbestos, lead and gas detection, work area protection and oil containment.
13.    Serve as crew leader as required, completing the necessary paperwork (material forms, time sheets, etc.) and reading and interpreting construction prints and work requests.

Internal: Operations Personnel, Distribution Design Technicians, Line Supervisors and Operation Managers     
External: Frequent customer interactions.    

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training
Required: 

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.  
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver License (CDL) with required endorsements.
  • Must be at an official Journeyman level Cable Splicer, Network Specialist or equivalent.  

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Required:  

Must have the ability and skills to pass an Operations Test Battery (BTSB).  Must have a general understanding of applicable OSHA guidelines.  Must possess a strong understanding of underground network systems with a minimum of three years of high voltage cable splicing experience.   

 

Physical Requirements:    
(Percentage of time in average 8-hour day performing each of the following tasks)    
65% of the time: Standing, Stooping Lifting, Squatting (Included w/stooping) Walking, Climbing (on ladders or into and out of a bucket) Reaching, Bending and Standing

35% of the time: Driving, Traveling, Breaks

WORK CONDITIONS
Work on energized systems and response to emergency call-outs in all types of weather conditions is required.  This position requires mechanical aptitude, and the ability to make successful decisions in high stress situations. May be required to travel inside and outside of the assigned service area.
