Tampa Electric and its sister companies serve a role in providing critical services to our community during an emergency. Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to our Tampa Electric customers. Team members are required to work in their normal job duties or other assigned activities. Proper compensation will be made in accordance with the company's rules and procedures.

POSITION CONCEPT

This position is part of a team that creates and publishes the 5 and 10-year Electric Delivery Transmission Construction Plans. This position conducts annual transmission planning studies to support the Tampa Electric capital construction program. This position completes studies and documentation to support Tampa Electric compliance activities. This position is responsible for completing studies and documentation for transmission and generation interconnections studies. This position may serve and represent Tampa Electric on various industry committees.

 

This position can be hired at four different levels:

  1. Engineer Associate
  2. Engineer I
  3. Engineer II
  4. Engineer Sr

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Performing engineering analysis and creating the Tampa Electric 5 and 10-year Transmission Capital Construction plan. Developing project scopes, costs and schedules. Providing technical support to Project Management team by completing cost estimates, analysis, and justification-documentation as necessary. (30%)
  2. Performing engineering analysis and documentation for completion or transmission service requests and generation interconnection studies. Coordinating studies with transmission customers and transmission owner-operators as required. (20%)
  3. Completing analysis, studies, reports and documentation for NERC and governmental compliance activities. (20%)
  4. Representing Tampa Electric on FRCC working groups such as Transmission Technical Sub-Committee and the Stability Assessment Sub-Committee. (10%)
  5. Creating and maintaining transmission planning electrical models (PSSE, PSCAD, FRDB, etc.) (10%)
  6. Performing additional duties as required. (10%)

 

SUPERVISION

Direct Supervision:         No direct supervisory responsibilities. 

Indirect Supervision:      May direct other technical personnel as needed for projects, committees and general work assignments.

 

RELATIONSHIPS

Internal:              Works frequently with engineers, technicians and managers of various departments at Tampa Electric.

External:             May work with counter parts at other utilities through the FRCC. Occasionally may work with Customers, Government and/or Regulatory Agencies, Vendors, and Consultants.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Engineer Associate

Education

Required:            Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited college

Preferred:           Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college

 

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred:           Professional Engineer in State of Florida.

 

Related Experience

Required:            No prior, or related, experience is required.

Preferred:           Prior experience in Transmission, Substation, Grid Operations, Generation or Planning and familiarity with TEC. Prior experience conducting transmission and generation interconnections studies. Prior experience and familiarity with the Florida Transmission System.  Prior experience working with the FRCC. Prior experience providing technical support to transmission grid operators.

 

  1. Engineer I

Education

Required:            Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited college

Preferred:           Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college

 

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred:           Professional Engineer in State of Florida.

 

Related Experience

Required:            18 months of related Engineering work experience is required. Or, 12 months of related Engineering experience with the FE(Fundamentals of Engineering) designation.

Preferred:           Prior experience in Transmission, Substation, Grid Operations, Generation or Planning and familiarity with TEC. Prior experience conducting transmission and generation interconnections studies. Prior experience and familiarity with the Florida Transmission System.  Prior experience working with the FRCC. Prior experience providing technical support to transmission grid operators.

 

 

 

  1. Engineer II

Education

Required:            Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited college

Preferred:           Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college

 

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred:           Professional Engineer in State of Florida.

 

Related Experience

Required:            4 years of related Engineering work experience.

Preferred:           Prior experience in Transmission, Substation, Grid Operations, Generation or Planning and familiarity with TEC. Prior experience conducting transmission and generation interconnections studies. Prior experience and familiarity with the Florida Transmission System.  Prior experience working with the FRCC. Prior experience providing technical support to transmission grid operators.

  1. Senior Engineer

Education

Required:            Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited college

Preferred:           Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college

 

Licenses/Certifications

Preferred:           Professional Engineer in State of Florida.

 

Related Experience

Required:             8 years of related Engineering work experience.

Preferred:           Prior experience in Transmission, Substation, Grid Operations, Generation or Planning and familiarity with TEC. Prior experience conducting transmission and generation interconnections studies. Prior experience and familiarity with the Florida Transmission System.  Prior experience working with the FRCC. Prior experience providing technical support to transmission grid operators.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (For all levels)

Required:           Familiarity of power system analysis concepts.

                              Must have sound knowledge of functional area of work and advanced engineering concepts.

                              Ability to direct others.

                              Ability to establish and implement efficient work procedures and practices.

 

Preferred:           Working knowledge of power system analysis concepts and prior experience with power flow software such as PTI’s PSS/E.  Ability to lead or complete complex transmission planning studies. Familiarity with the Florida Transmission System and prior experience working with the FRCC. Prior experience providing technical support to transmission grid operators. Prior experience with TEC’s Facility Rating Database. Prior experience with PSCAD EMT analysis software.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position primarily (~95% of time) works in a professional office environment. Occasionally (~5% of time) required to be outside “in the field” for site-meetings or projects meetings. Some travel may be required. Occasional unplanned and planned overtime is required. Periodically may serve as “on-call” person that requires being available to work after-hours and weekends.
