POSITION CONCEPT
This position is responsible for engineering support and expertise for the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) and other applications used by the DSO. Specifically, the DSO Engineer will be responsible for operational support of the DSO as it relates to ADMS, Power Apps, ADMS advanced applications, Fault Analysis, Volt VAR Optimization, Distribution Power Flow. This support will occur within the Distribution Control Center and will require frequent coordination with engineering groups, IT Applications Support, and other operational support organizations.
Engineer classification is multi-level, based on the qualification guidelines outlined in the Company’s Engineer Career Path, Administrative Policy 2.13. A minimum classification of an Engineer II is required in this position.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Oversee the real-time monitoring of the distribution system, including substations, feeders, and switches, to ensure efficient and reliable power distribution which includes supporting the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS), enabling smart grid with applications, including SCADA, FLISR, Volt/Var, DERMS, Switching, Outage Management, and reporting/dashboards. (30%)
2. Perform short term and long-term electric engineering plans for optimizing the distribution system, including system/data analysis, be apprised of industry trends and enhancements, test system functionality, and maintain application configuration settings of the ADMS applications. (10%)
3. Provide guidance to DSO operators on system operations, emergency response procedures, new technologies, and regulatory compliance to ensure a competent and knowledgeable workforce. (10%)
4. Coordinate emergency response efforts during power outages or equipment failures, prioritizing restoration efforts, and communicating with customers and stakeholders to minimize downtime and ensure safety. (10%)
5. Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards related to distribution system operations, including NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) standards, cybersecurity protocols, and safety regulations. (10%)
6. Utilize advanced modeling and simulation software to predict system behavior, assess the impact of proposed changes, and optimize the distribution network for performance, reliability, and resilience. (10%)
7. Develop and implement strategies for asset management and maintenance, including preventive maintenance programs, equipment inspections, and condition-based monitoring, to prolong the lifespan of assets and minimize downtime. (10%)
8. Maintain and operate the Volt VAR Optimization, Voltage Control and Rotating Load Shed programs as needed. Provide engineering expertise to the department. (10%)
SUPERVISION
Indirect Supervision: DCC, All Distribution Service Areas, Substation, Transmission, Meter, Light, Line Clearance and all contractors.
RELATIONSHIPS
Internal: Interacts with all Electric Delivery departments within the Company and various other departments outside of Electric Delivery.
External: Interacts with customers, vendors, and other utilities and industry groups as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Required: Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from an ABET accredited college program
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an ABET accredited college program
Licenses/Certifications
Preferred: Professional Engineer License (PE) is preferred and accepted in lieu of up to one year of engineering work experience
Related Experience
Preferred: 4 years of utility transmission or distribution engineering experience
Experience working with ADMS or EMS advanced applications

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position primarily (~95% of time) works in a professional office environment. Occasionally (~5% of time) required to be outside “in the field” for site-meetings. Some travel may be required. Occasional unplanned and planned overtime is required. Responsible for storm restoration duties.
