POSITION CONCEPT: 
The Superintendent Generation (SPO) is responsible in a line capacity to the Manager of Operations for ensuring the generating units are operated in a safe, cost effective, and efficient manner. The SPO is responsible for maintaining environmental compliance, NERC compliance, water management, and the dispatch of units consistent with system load requirements with the Energy Control Center. The SPO is responsible for the supervision, development, coaching, and counseling of all assigned personnel.  The SPO ensures that equipment conditions are accurately documented and provides input to maintenance for work scheduling and prioritization. The SPO provides input to the Manager of Operations for long and short-term manpower planning and annual budget preparation. 

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supervise, coach, counsel and give daily direction to assigned personnel. Conduct regular performance reviews and ensure that appropriate action is taken on recognized behavior needs.
  • Assure that all personnel, labor relations (contract), and employee performance issues, including administration of the Positive Discipline program, are handled appropriately. Coach and foster an environment of open communication with employees.
  • Ensure Corporate / Department (ES) / Station Policies are understood and followed. Maintain and provide leadership that supports company and station goals. Support opportunities for improvement and provide leadership required for successful implementation of new strategies  
  • Ensure complete communication with all operations and maintenance teams so that there is a seamless transition between shifts relating to equipment problems, load restrictions, and reliability issues. 
  • Keep Energy Control personnel, duty personnel, plant management, engineering and technical staff updated on equipment problems, system restrictions, return to service delays, and reliability issues. 
  • Complete turn over logs, unusual incident reports, accident reports, environmental incident reports, CEM malfunction documentation, and the capability report.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the station’s emergency response plan and respond to all emergencies according to the plan, station policy and security protocol. Emergency response may require reassignment of maintenance activities due to emergencies and a determination if shelter in place is required during a release. 
  • Fires, accidents, injuries, Hazmat incidents, bomb threats, Hurricanes, confined space rescue team, and personnel injuries all fall under response duties for the SPO.
  • Uses sound judgment and experience to make timely decisions and give clear direction under stressful situations to maintain the safety of plant personnel and equipment. Ensure that all personnel are appropriately trained on Safety and Environmental policies and procedures and that all training records are up to date.  Ensure that all employees understand and follow safe work practices and environmental policies and procedures in the performance of all work.
  • Possess and utilize a thorough understanding of unit operating procedures and be able to perform successful startups and shutdowns. Ensure proper implementation of the Hazardous Energy Control program and policies.  Should have solid plant process knowledge to troubleshoot problems and articulate in a professional manner to fellow team mates and subordinates. 
  • Provide timely input, both long and short range, to the Manager Operations on budget requirements including manpower needs. Manage and be accountable for the budget allocated to his/her work areas.
  • Maintain station security working with ATO’s, communicate and respond to Tampa Bay Water, ST (Separation Technology), Tampa Bay Pipeline, hold and log daily job briefings (tail boards).    

EDUCATION:
Required: A minimum of a high school education is required.      
Preferred: Some formal ongoing management training is desired. Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline from an accredited institution in accordance with TECO’s education policy.    

 

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Ten (10) years of power plant experience, with experience in operations or in a technical role that supports operations. OR Twenty (20) years of relevant power plant experience.
Preferred: Experience supervising covered or craft employees. Experience in coal fired and combined cycle operation.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Required: 

  • Strong understanding of all phases of power plant or industrial process operations.
  • Ability to direct and/or collaborate with others to operate, maintain, and resolve technical and process issues.
  • Ability to lead and motivate team members to meet company/station goals and personal development.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to respond to plant needs with 24/7 coverage

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS 

  • Must be able to pass a pulmonary function and negative pressure fit test
  • Must be able to use personal protective equipment. 
  • Must be able to work in dusty, hot and noisy environments
  • Must be able to work from elevated platforms
  • Must be able to ascend and descend from ladders and stairs
