The TECO Energy Internship & Cooperative Education Program offers college degree-seeking students the opportunity for professional growth while meeting the business needs of the company. The program is an extension of the educational process, providing practical experience to complement formal classroom work. The co-op program recruits students from colleges to give them an opportunity to work in a professional environment related to their field of study.

 

POSITION CONCEPT:
Co-Op opportunity in the Technology Operation Center (TOC), will start off learning and performing Level 1 tasks and support of the multiple 24X7 Operational roles related to Network Technologies (NetTech), After Hours Service Desk, Security, Major Incidents, IT Infrastructure Proactive Monitoring and response, Vendor interaction, Disaster Recovery, Infrastructure project support, and various other IT infrastructure and Customer Experience (CE) aspects.  Working towards proficiency in proactive monitoring, implementing, maintaining/upgrading, and supporting of new and existing network, server, storage infrastructure, and IT applications.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Proactive monitoring of the IT Infrastructure and Business applications to detect and respond to work stoppages and/or errors through various monitoring postures and systems.
  • Problem solving involving basic troubleshooting, following the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model, making or calling for equipment repairs, and problem escalation.
  • Perform Level 1 tasks centered around Checklists, Monitoring platforms, and Emails.
  • Login to consoles, interfaces, iLo’s, and various software tools to install, patch, and support the virtual aspects of the network infrastructure, servers, storage, operating systems, and software.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and engage vendors for various LAN/WAN and internet technologies to include MPLS, SD-WAN, and routing protocols.
  • Work with security SME(s) to support the security posture of the IT infrastructure across multiple platforms (Firewalls, Operating Systems, and other network devices).
  • Staffs and supports the afterhours IT functions to include the 24X7 Operations hotline, after hours Service Desk, Security administration, Windows system administration, OAM projects/tasks, Patching, Upgrades, Troubleshooting, Metrics, Billing, Major Incident, and Disaster Recovery (DR) functions of the TOC.

 

Co-Op Network Technologies Analyst

This role will primarily focus on the level 1 task of maintaining 24X7 coverage in the Technology Operation Center (TOC), performing the functions that support, monitor, troubleshoot, diagnose, and remedies the Operational functional aspects of server and network problems and failures. Encompasses the Operational roles of Network Technologies (NetTech), After Hours Service Desk, Security to includes some Check Point Firewall functions, Major Incidents, IT Infrastructure, Proactive Monitoring and response, Vendor interaction, Disaster Recovery, Infrastructure project support, and various other IT infrastructure and Customer Experience (CE) systems/roles.

This role is critical to maintaining the companies’ IT Network infrastructure and security postures and support the business partners need.

 

Level of Responsibility:

Support: Monitors, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and remedies server and network problems and failures

Implement: Installs and configures server and network hardware and software

Maintain/upgrade: Upgrades and patches network hardware and software

Lead/Consult: Project leadership, consulting, or cross-train peers

 

EDUCATION:

Required:  Valid High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Preferred:  Associates or Bachelor’s degree issued by a regionally accredited Institution (SACs, etc.) in Computer Science, Engineering, Math, or equivalent IT discipline (MIS).

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

Required:  Entry level, so no specific completed certification. Desire to work towards at least one associate level certification (i.e. Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA), VMware Certified Associate (VCA), HP Accredited Technical Associate (ATA) – Servers & Storage, or Cisco Certified Network Associate).

Preferred:  CCNA, VCA, HP ATA S&S or MCSA

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA):
Preferred:  

  • Switching, routing, DNS/DHCP, Windows Active Directory, Storage Area Networks, Server virtualization, networking/server hardware installation and maintenance, Security appliances.     
  • Employees at this level work under direct supervision and gain experience as a Network and Systems Analysts with the ability to support existing server and network infrastructure. 
  • Entry level knowledge of most types of network or server infrastructure regardless of the complexity.  Supports the following technologies: switching, routing, DNS/DHCP, Windows Active Directory, VMware, and hardware installation and maintenance.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Flex’s with student school schedule with shifts available 24X7 to include nights and weekends.  
  • Office environment is the normal working environment with field work required during upgrades and break/fix activities. 
  • Occasional travel needed for supporting remote facilities.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS:

  • Tasks require handling objects up to 50 pounds on a routine basis. Involves standing and/or walking for extended periods of time and lifting networking, smaller UPS’s, and server equipment. 
  • Minimal exposure to physical risks such as operating dangerous equipment.
