Supervises the activities of the Gas Design Technicians (GDTs) and Gas Design Project Managers (GDPMs) performing the design and engineering of additions and modifications to the natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline system. The Supervisor, Gas Design, is responsible for the development and oversight of the engineering/construction designs to ensure applicable codes, regulatory requirements and company standards are met.



Throughout all aspects of the position’s duties, ensure that all work is performed safely, according to Safe Work Practices.

        1. Supervise the daily operations of the GDTs, GDPMs and administrative resources needed to plan, design and engineer additions and changes to the natural gas transmission and distribution system that serves new and existing customers. These activities involve the application of sound engineering practice, ensuring applicable codes, regulatory requirements, proper financials, and company standards are met and balanced with the goals of the Gas Distribution Engineering team and Peoples Gas System’s corporate objectives.   Approval of work requests, addressing customer priorities and in-service dates; verifying material and labor values, coordinating and forecasting projects, and negotiating deliverable expectations. (20%)
        2. Mentor direct reports in negotiations, project management coordination, billing accuracy, engineering design, and construction aspects related to new and existing customer gas loads impacting PGS’s distribution system.  Provide development opportunities and job site assistance to complement the Gas Design Technician Training Program.  Administer the team member Performance Review, Individual Development Plan and Positive Discipline programs.  Monitor and recommend promotional and associated salary increases. Facilitate goal alignment, team member engagement, and a free flow of information for team growth. (20%)
        3. Addresses customer and FPSC complaints from initial contact to problem resolution, involving company resources, such as assigned account representatives, as needed. Investigate and implement solutions.    To mitigate customer complaints and ensure the existing natural gas distribution system meets PGS’s distribution reliability standards and monitor system performance. Additionally, assist with claims investigations as needed. (20%)
        4. Conduct job hazard analyses and, as needed, coach team members to ensure they are in compliance with current safety procedures and protocols.   Communicate safety expectations, recognize safety achievement and review safety statistics monthly.   Support Safety Committee activities and Peoples Gas System safety efforts. (10%)
        5. Provide direction for planning, coordination and optimization of resources utilized by PGS’s Operating Divisions with regards to the construction projects within assigned areas. Coordinate on-going efforts and provide necessary changes when appropriate. (10%)
        6. Participate in the system planning of projects related to future natural gas system expansion and modifications, providing consultation and assistance in major load additions and projects of unusual nature.  Monitor the service area construction program and act as project leader as assigned. Provide input for budgeting capital construction projects. (10%)
        7. Manage cost center overtime and capital specific budget; review and approve team member business expenses. Provide input to the service area’s business plan, annual capital and O&M budgets and its required forecasting activity, including the tools, methods, and procedures.  Identify, evaluate and develop new and existing technologies and strategies for process improvements, efficiencies and safety.  Serve as back up to the Manager, Gas Distribution Engineering and/or Regional Operations Manager in his/her absence related to Engineering or customer concerns and issues. (10%)



Direct:                  Gas Distribution Engineering department within the assigned service area, consisting of a technical staff of Gas Design Technicians, Gas Design Project Managers, and administrative support staff.




                                 Required:            Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering field from a regionally accredited college/university

                                 Preferred:           Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical/Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university


R                                 Required:            Valid Florida State Driver’s License with clean driving record.

                                   Preferred:           Maintenance of Traffic MOT (ATSSA) certification, and Florida Underground Utilities Contractor license

                              Related Experience

                                   Required:           Minimum of six (6) years of gas distribution or infrastructure design (municipal design, water, sewer, etc).

                                   Preferred:           Experience in AutoCAD and/or Microstation.



                                      Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)

Required:           Must have demonstrated leadership and management/supervisory skills plus the ability to function successfully within the team environment with consistent positive leadership, customer service, initiative skills and self-motivation to continue to learn.  

                              Must have demonstrated ability in performing highly technical, complex assignments and designs with minimal direction.

Preferred:           Familiarity with PHMSA – Pipeline Safety Regulations Part 191 and 192, Florida Administrative Code – Chapter 25-12, Florida Utility Accommodation Manual, Maintenance of Traffic (ATSSA), FDOT Design Standards, and GIS is preferred.



Can expect to work an 8-hour day, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime to meet customer deadlines and storm response. Working conditions are both indoors & outdoors in varying weather conditions. The level of stress varies depending on work load and customer deadlines.



Physical demand requirements include working in field conditions, walk in rough terrain and lift objects up to 50 lbs., while wearing Personal Protective Equipment as required per the Safe Work Practices manual.
