This is a multi-level position within the levels of Engineer II & higher and the salary range for this position varies and is commensurate with skills, experience, and education.

 

 

 

Accountabilities:

Reporting to the Supervisor, Relay & Control Engineering, the Tampa Electric Company (TEC) Substation Relay & Control Engineer will provide engineering and operations support for substation relay and control. Additionally, this engineer maintains the auto-transformer loading guide, serves in the Substation Operations on-call rotation, and on the Safety Committee.

 

More specifically, the Substation Relay & Control Engineer will:

  • Development of all relay and control drawings for assigned projects including elementaries, layout and installation drawings, wiring diagrams, bills of material, nameplate schedules, and cable schedules. Preparing and submitting work orders and other associated paperwork along with necessary drawings to the operating departments, and reconciliation of all records, prints, etc. once work is completed. Also includes writing operating and switching instructions and assisting with field operations as needed.
  • Obtaining the knowledge and developing the skills necessary to calculate substation transformer loading per IEEE Std. C57.91, publishing the results in the TEC auto-transformer Loading Guide and the DETM as appropriate. Provide related input to TEC Power Transformer specifications and advising ED System Planning and System Operations on transformer loading issues.
  • Consulting with Energy Delivery's System Security to establish protection requirements and operating philosophy and development of relay protection and control schemes consistent with TEC system requirements. Investigating and evaluating available protection and control devices and providing input into the selection and purchasing of materials. Advising operations on purpose of schemes and obtaining feedback for improvement on subsequent designs.
  • Serving as an on-call engineer in the Substation Operations call-out rotation.
  • Working with Energy Supply and other teams, support our Solar and grid modernization projects.                            

Competencies, Education & Experience:

*Candidates may qualify in this multi-graded position as an Engineer II & higher level based upon skills, experience, and education. Consideration for higher level position will require more experience directly related to the duties of the job in addition to meeting more of the preferred qualifications and requires more independent judgment, accountability and oversight, leadership and/or subject matter expertise in performance of this position.

 

Required:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited college/university.
  • Must have valid EIT and be eligible to become a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Florida.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of experience in power system engineering and operations.
  • Valid driver license with a good driving record.
  • Sound knowledge of relay and control systems and be able to independently evaluate and modify the system designs.
  • Ability to perform most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected and will receive technical guidance on unusual or complex problems. Will carry the independent responsibility for the engineering of major substation projects.
  • Relevant experience may be considered in lieu of some of the requirements.

 

Preferred: 

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited college/university strongly preferred.
  • Professional Engineering License, PE in the State of Florida highly desired.
  • Advanced degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of direct work experience in protective relaying and control engineering.  SCADA and RTU configuration experience (1 year or more).
  • Additional years of Engineering experience, direct and/or related to the Accountabilities of this position.
  • Ability to handle individual researcher or staff specialist responsibilities and to conduct, coordinate, and supervise complex engineering studies and reports.
  • Ability to assist in training, orientation, work assignments and supervision of other employees, if required.

 

Working Conditions & Physical Demands/Requirements

  • Work is performed mostly in a normal office environment but can spend an hour or more on any given day in the field at substations or in the stores yard to gather data, work with crews, etc.
  • Some overtime or weekend work may be required.
  • Working in substations requires walking on uneven surfaces (granite rock, limestone roadways and grass areas).
  • Expected to work in post-storm conditions (such as the aftermath of a hurricane).
