WHAT YOU’LL DO
The GIS Technician I or II at Peoples Gas works under general supervision on somewhat varied duties requiring judgment or simple analysis to determine course of action with limited latitude. Provides leadership on GIS and various other assignments of moderate complexity as needed. responsible for the support, administration, configuration, data administration, enhancement, and testing of GIS (Geographic Information System) systems and related applications used by Peoples Gas System. Work includes quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of GIS and mapping data to ensure that as-built information from the field, pipeline network continuity and integrity, equipment identifiers, equipment attributes, and spatial information is correct and up to date. Work also includes maintenance and updates to land base information on the GIS. The position works closely with end-users and IT technical staff to analyze, design, build, and produce maps, queries, and reports from the GIS in support of efficient operations and effective decision-making.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
GIS TECHNICIAN I
- Maintains and updates the Company’s GIS system to meet company, state, and federal guidelines and compliance regulations by entering pipeline information and locations into GIS from as-built work order system and proposed sketches.
- Provides basic mapping, design, drafting, and plotting services.
- Provide assistance to GDD Technicians and Project Managers in the marking and submittal of road improvement plans for municipalities and the FDOT.
- Communicates with engineering and architectural firms, as well as local and state agencies to provide assistance with infrastructure, environmental and regulatory impacts to the gas distribution and transmission pipeline network system.
GIS TECHNICIAN II
- Perform the duties of the Gas GIS Technician I
- Utilizes GIS and drafting skills and principles to create, revise, maintain, and archive GIS/GPS data, GIS and CAD maps, and CAD drawings while adhering to standards and procedures
- Apply GIS and mapping skills to complex work requests
- Perform QA/QC of GIS and mapping data on complex work requests
- Perform basic spatial analyses; analyze information generated by the GIS in the form of maps, displays, reports, and queries
- Supports GIS design projects review, adjust and/or corrects the GIS land base using aerial photography, CAD drawings, or Florida land base data
What We’re Looking For
Must Haves for Both Levels:
- Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent certificate
- Valid Florida State Driver License and safe driving record
GIS TECHNICIAN I
- Minimum of four (4) years of work experience related to the Duties and Responsibilities of this position is required.
- Related experience consists of work related to the items described in this section.
- Appropriate college degrees may be considered in lieu of some work experience. Appropriate degrees include disciplines such as Geography, GIS, and Drafting.
- Must be knowledgeable in CAD for drafting purposes as well as computerized database systems.
- Must have practical knowledge of basic drafting principles and GIS systems.
- Knowledgeable in the use of Customer Information Systems (CIS) and other related databases as a tool in system design and modeling.
- Proficient in at least one related software application such as: Utility Center, Intergraph G/Technology, ESRI ArcInfo, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other similar systems.
GIS TECHNICIAN II
- Minimum of 2 years as GIS Technician I; or minimum of six (6) years of related experience; Related experience consists of work in progressively more complex technical assignments and as described in the Primary Duties & Responsibilities of this position.
- Demonstrated and sustained above expected performance as a Gas GIS Technician I or equivalent position with the ability and potential for assuming greater responsibility.
- The ability to effectively assist internal/external customers in making technical decisions pertaining to GIS.
- Appropriate college degrees may be considered in lieu of some work experience. Appropriate degrees include disciplines such as Geography, GIS, and Drafting.
Nice-to-Haves:
- GIS Certification
- PGS GIS Technician experience
- Experience with PGS’ geographical information systems (GIS).
- Knowledge of natural gas utility mapping and construction practices and work order concepts
- Knowledge of other natural gas utility applications, such as work management or outage management
- Knowledge of geospatial analysis techniques

Working Conditions
Work hours consist of a minimum of 8-hours per day Monday through Friday. Some overtime is required to meet internal/external customer deadlines and storm response. Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. The level of stress is moderate to heavy depending upon the level of interaction with internal/external customers and governmental agencies.
Physical Demands
Physical demand requirements include working in a mixture of office and field conditions, which includes walking in rough terrain, lifting objects up to 50 lbs., and wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in an 8-hour day.
The successful applicant will be required to take and pass a Baseline Medical Examination as part of the pre-employment screening once an offer has been accepted. A pre-employment drug screening, as well as a background check (including education, employment, criminal and motor vehicle) will also be conducted as part of the pre-employment screening. A physical may be conducted if required for the role.
