POSITION CONCEPT:

The Operations Engineer serves as the focal point for developing and implementing Operational Excellence procedures and training programs.   The Operations Engineer provides engineering and technical support to the operating teams with a focus on improving the reliability, maintainability, and availability of the generating units.  The Operations Engineer will work with the Station’s engineers and technical support staff, their combined efforts used to analyze and resolve complex issues leading to optimum systems performance.  Candidate is also responsible for safe, cost-effective and environmentally compliant operations of Water & Fuels.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Operation

  • Perform critical system identification, assessment, and develop/implement best practices
  • Verify that current operations tools and procedures are technically correct, consistent, and meet all current requirements
  • Provide leadership in understanding station operating procedures and compliance
  • Communicate with Grid Operations, Operations, Generation Planning and Marketing on unit specific availability and performance metrics
  • Provide budget, scope, and planning input for operating activities and improvement projects
  • Act as back for Operation Manager when applicable
  • Assist in unit startups, shutdowns, outage planning and input to troubleshoot operating and equipment issues that may arise

Supervision

Water & Fuels:

  • Supervise and give daily direction to their assigned personnel. Coach and foster an environment of open communication with employees. Conduct regular performance reviews. Utilize company tools to develop employee performance and skills
  • Ensure safe work practices and station safety programs are followed. Ensure Corporate / Department (ES) / Station Policies are understood and practiced. Maintain and provide leadership toward attainment of company and station goals
  • Manage expenditures within approved O&M budget and capital targets
  • Identify, evaluate, conclude, or recommend improvements to design, construction, and operation of the assigned equipment
  • Develop and maintain a skill training program that provides for the development of W&F personnel to meet the present and future needs of the station

Maintenance and Technical Support

  • Review, track, maintain and evaluate plant operating metrics
  • Provide process / operations engineering support
  • Take action to ensure optimum plant performance
  • Create and implement plans to improve station capability, reliability, efficiency and safety

Misc.

  • Communicate effectively with updates on (i) Monthly GADS, (ii) natural gas use, (iii) goals / unit performance (e.g., heat rate, availability, WEFOR), and/or any other operating matrices
  • Foster and develop a team environment with engineering, technical and operating staff
  • Assist with the development and implementation of operational training, including CCS Progression
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Operations Manager or Station Director

 

EDUCATION, (LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS):

Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited college

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering degree from an ABET accredited college

 

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Minimum of four (4) years of experience related to Primary Duties and Responsibilities of this position

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

Required:

  • Strong knowledge of power plant processes and water chemistry
  • A strong attention to detail, good planning skills, and good written/verbal communication skills is necessary to be effective
  • This position requires the ability to direct and/or collaborate with others to operate, maintain, and resolve technical and process issues
  • The ability to lead and motivate team members to focus on company/station goals and personal development
     

WORK CONDITIONS:

Some overtime and weekend work may be required. Must be able to withstand working outside and noisy plant environments.  Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required. Must be able to pass a pulmonary function and negative pressure respirator fit test.
