POSITION CONCEPT: 

The Renewables Engineer will be responsible for solar pre-construction activities, business case development and other related special projects. The position will have direct contact with contractors and consultants on pre-construction activities for commercial and utility scale solar projects and storage technologies. This includes engineering, permitting, technology review, identifying and securing land, and feasibility studies. The position may also be responsible for procurement, project engineering, and project management. The position is responsible for carrying out complex and novel assignments requiring techniques and analysis of business implications and providing strategic input on available technologies for deployment on future Tampa Electric assets. This position will also provide support for regulatory, which includes assisting in testimony preparation, answering interrogatories, and responding to data requests.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Within the limits of authorized objectives, policies, procedures, plans, schedules and budgets, this position has the responsibility and commensurate authority to:
  • Conducts engineering studies and analyses in areas such as capacity utilization, modeling techniques, design and cost, performance, and advancements in emerging technologies. Makes technical recommendations for implementing new technologies and project feasibility. Recommendations based on providing cost-effective, reliable, and resilient energy service to customers. 
  • Facilitate engineering review and approval of projects during permitting and design phases. Responsible for the preparation and/or review of engineering designs and specifications for renewable energy and energy storage projects in addition to special projects. Including but not limited to review of electrical, structural, and site layout and design to ensure adequate drainage for ongoing vegetation management and site operation. 
  • Support engineering projects or studies as assigned in accordance with all applicable project procedures including logistics and documentation of costs, safe harbor, deliveries, schedules, and quality assurance. 
  • Interface with other departments in Tampa Electric relative to the economic feasibility, strategic impact, and regulatory consequences of projects. Provide technical expertise as required. Provide consultation and guidance for renewable and storage projects and other department personnel in technical matters as related to equipment design, materials and operating characteristics for existing and new renewable energy and energy storage projects. 
  • Assist in the reporting of forecast data to regulatory bodies and affiliated companies. This includes regulatory strategy development, preparation of exhibits, preparation of interrogatories, strategic or policy discussions with management of other companies and regulatory staff, and assisting in the preparation of direct, and/or rebuttal testimony in regulatory proceedings.

Key External: Engineering, Construction, and Equipment Suppliers, County and City Officials, Government and Regulatory Agencies, Key Account Customer Executives and Legal Counsel, Industry Associations such as Smart Energy Power Alliance (SEPA), and Florida Solar Energy Industries Association, IOU Consortiums, Community Business and Non-profit Leaders from across Tampa Electric’s Service Area, University Professors and Staff.


EDUCATION:

Required: Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an ABET accredited four-year college.
Preferred: N/A

 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:
Preferred: Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certificate or EIT.
Preferred: Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Florida.

 

EXPERIENCE:

Required: None. Associate Engineer
Required: Minimum of 18 months or 12 months with FE/EIT. Engineer I
Required: Minimum of four (4) years of design engineering, project engineering, and/or project management in the energy industry experience. Engineer II
Preferred: Four (4) years of related experience consisting of project management, project engineering, contract execution, solar industry experience. Strong knowledge and/or ability to learn cost, engineering, design, technology, and performance aspects of solar related equipment and processes. Solid understanding of business practices including contracts, budgeting, and resource planning.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Required: A strong attention to detail, good planning skills, good written/verbal communication skills, ability to work in a team environment, and a heightened awareness for safety is required. Proficient in Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Preferred: Basic knowledge of Microsoft SharePoint and advanced knowledge of Excel (use of pivot tables, macros, etc.), PVsyst, HelioScope, and AutoCAD.

 

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Working outdoors in hot, humid, wet and/or cold conditions.
  • Working around a Power Generation facility.
  • Working conditions could include areas of elevated noise (hearing protection required).
