Reporting to the Vice-President, Human Resources, the Director Total Rewards will play a key role in driving strategy and overseeing all aspects of the organization’s compensation, health and retirement benefits, people analytics and payroll programs. The successful incumbent will work with senior leaders to ensure Tampa Electric’s total rewards are market competitive and meet organizational objectives.


More specifically, the Director will:


  • Partner with the HR leaders of Tampa Electric, PGS and NMGS and other stakeholders to identify strategic priorities for the business;
  • Lead the design, development and implementation of Tampa Electric, PGS and NMGC’s total rewards programs (compensation, incentive pay, benefits, retirement) and associated processes;
  • Direct the implementation of new compensation structure and lead the education and communication initiatives to enhance the understanding of this new structure by HR, business leaders and employees using a change management methodology;
  • Enhance the timely delivery of payroll services and provide insight and recommendations in matters related to labor costs to drive business outcomes;
  • Evaluate market data, industry trends, and best practices, seeking opportunities to enhance the effectiveness of the total rewards programs;
  • Develop long-term strategies based on program utilization, costs, effectiveness, and cultural readiness;
  • Provide insight and bring innovative strategies to benefits design and administration enabling the company to optimize value and meet financial objectives;
  • Drive innovation in analytical approaches to help shape and enhance the HR team’s analytics capabilities to understand and contribute to the people aspect of strategic business planning;
  • Stay abreast of external best practices and demonstrate leadership through expert counsel to HR and business leaders on matters related to total rewards;
  • Monitor the effectiveness of programs and provide strategic advice on how to enhance and simplify service delivery while driving operational excellence;
  • Lead, coach, and develop team to deliver best-in-class results;  
  • Partner with Legal, IT and Finance teams to ensure compliance with all federal and state laws (including ERISA compliance) comply with governmental reporting and disclosure requirements and sit on TECO’s Benefits Committee.



Competencies, Education and Experience:


  • A bachelor’s degree in Business, Human Resources or related field;
  • 10+ years of related experience including 4 at the leadership level;
  • Extensive knowledge of total rewards programs including compensation, benefits and retirement;
  • Prior project management experience with demonstrated aptitude in rolling out large company wide initiatives, processes or systems;
  • Knowledge of relevant compliance and regulatory requirements (including ERISA compliance);
  • Demonstrated experience in driving operation excellence in areas such as HR systems or processes;
  • Strong business acumen, analytical skills and attention to detail;
  • Ability to demonstrate how HR programs contribute to strategic objectives and drive organizational performance;
  • Previous experience in leading or developing advanced HR analytics tools and strategies and able to translate data into insights;
  • A natural collaborator that excels at balancing the needs of different stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written and the ability to influence and inspire others.
  • Relevant experience will be considered in lieu of some of the requirements.



  • Society of Human Resources Manager (SHRM) Certification or MS/MA/MBA is preferred.
