What you will be doing if you are offered this position & accept:


Our Data Architect, as a member of the Business Intelligence and Analytics team, is responsible for the “back end” components of the organizations BIA environment from standards, architecture, and design perspectives.  The Data Architect has overall responsibility for the implementation and support of the data movement and engineering processes required to populate the organizations custom-built analytic data structures (e.g., staging areas, data warehouse and data marts) as well as the design of these structures.  Further, this role is responsible for the strategy and design related to the ‘federation’ of custom-built data architecture with vendor provided solutions.  The individual in this role provides technical oversight and assures the quality of the work done by data analysts and data engineers/ETL developers.  The Data Architect is a Business Intelligence/Data Warehousing subject matter expert with significant, recent hands-on experience with a state-of-the-art data integration and cleansing tools available in the SAP and Azure platforms etc.


This role is responsible for assuring that data integration and cleansing tool suites are effectively deployed and that ETL applications are developed based on industry and vendor-specified best practices.  Working in conjunction with the Information Architect and other members of the BIA team, the Data Architect has overall responsibility for ensuring that the organizations analytic data architecture effectively enables BIA applications.  The person in this role works with the Enterprise Architecture team in the development of standards in the areas of data modeling, metadata management, data integration and master data management.


This position may be considered for a remote work arrangement with periodic travel to Tampa, FL as well as on an as needed basis.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities:


  • The Data Architect has the overall responsibility for defining and evolving organizations BIA data architecture: the portion of the overall BIA solution focused on providing data to the BIA applications developed on behalf of the organization stakeholders.  In adherence with enterprise architecture standards, the individual in this position:
    • Develops and evolves the architecture based on industry best practices and the relative strengths of organizations standard DBMS (e.g., SAP HANA, Oracle, Microsoft Azure), big data, and data integration and cleansing tool suites.
    • Ensures that the data architecture effectively supports all relevant use cases including reporting, OLAP, ad hoc query, dashboards and scorecards, data mining, statistical analysis, and others as they emerge.
    • Applies architectural and engineering concepts to ensure the architecture meets operational requirements, such as scalability, maintainability, security, reliability, extensibility, flexibility, availability, and manageability.
    • Develops an overarching strategy for ‘federation’ of custom-developed and vendor provided data architecture
    • Evaluates utility industry common information models and determines how best to leverage.
    • Determines the technical environment(s) (i.e. cloud vs. on premise) on which the data architecture is to be deployed.
  • In adherence/alignment with enterprise standards, the Data Architect is responsible for developing standards and best practices for:
    • Source data analysis and documentation.
    • ETL design and documentation (e.g., specifications, operations guides, etc.)
    • Data federation (e.g., between AMI, Empower and custom-built analytic data structures)
    • Business rule placement (in conjunction with the Information Architect).
    • ETL application testing.
    • ETL application release management (in conjunction with Change Coordinator).
    • Database-level security model for analytic data structures (in conjunction with DBAs).
    • Data masking/anonymization/tokenization.
  • This position is accountable for the translation of user requirements into data models and the ETL applications that populate these structures.  As such, the Data Architect:
    • Oversees the efforts of data analysts to analyze and document the sources of data (e.g., SAP (CRMB/ERP/WAM etc.), AMI/MDM, ADMS, Smart Lighting) that provision analytic data structures.
    • Designs or provides guidance to ETL developers in the design of ETL applications.
    • Designs the analytic data structure logical and physical data models.
    • Deploys the metadata management tool(s) to capture, maintain and present metadata (technical and user) describing:
      • Data sources.
      • Analytic data structures.
      • BIA application semantic layer(s).
      • BIA applications (reports, dashboards, OLAP cubes, etc.).
  • Regarding the data integration and cleansing tool environment this role:
    • Is responsible for the implementation of the security model.
    • Collaborates with appropriate groups on the design and evolution of the required support environments (i.e., development, test, etc.).
    • Collaborates with other senior IT staff for the development of best practices for code and release management processes.
    • Is responsible for the design and evolution of the deployed operational environment.
    • Collaborates with the DBA and operations personnel for the ongoing monitoring and tuning of the performance of the ETL application and of the analytic data structures.
  • The Data Architect is accountable for the quality of data model and ETL application deliverables and so is responsible for establishing and managing QA related functions including:
    • Testing (unit, system, stress, etc.).
    • Peer reviews (e.g., reviews of data models, ETL application design, etc.).
  • This position provides technical oversight of the activities of ETL developers and data analysts and provide coaching and mentoring to these BIA team members regarding technical skills and competencies.
  • Participates in BIA demand management with the BIA Director, Information Architect, Project Management Office, and business stakeholders by providing technical expertise required to estimate levels of technical effort, develop work breakdown structures and allocating technical resources to projects.
  • Serves as a technical subject matter expert (SME) to provide consultation for BIA-related initiatives (e.g., initiatives (like AMI/MDM, Grid Modernization, SAP WAM) that may have a BIA component).  


Education & Experience Requirements:


  • 7+ years of direct work experience performing the Duties & Responsibilities of this position or performing duties closely related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position. Including:
    • Minimum 7 years of recent experience in of recent hands-on experience with data / information modeling, (including the design and deployment of both normalized and dimensional data structures) as well as state-of-the-art ETL, cleansing, profiling and metadata management tools (including installation, configuration and tuning, security management, design and application development).  
    • Minimum 4 years of hands-on experience with state-of-the-art platforms: SAP BW4/HANA, HANA Enterprise, SQL Server, Oracle, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft PowerBI etc.
    •  3+ years of supervisory or leadership experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information/Computer Science, Business Administration, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems, or equivalent discipline.  from a regionally accredited college/university.

  • One, or more, current professional certifications in specific job-related disciplines.
  • Advanced degree(s) in business administration, computer science, information systems, or related information technology field.
  • Gas or Electric utility experience in data/information management
  • Experience working in large public or private sector organizations.
  • Experience in Big Data/HADOOP.


Knowledge Skills & Abilities (KSA):




  • Deep knowledge of and experience with SAP and Microsoft Azure suites (ETL, service bus and data quality tool components) and understanding of SAP HANA, SQL Server, Oracle, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft PowerBI etc. platforms and ability to provide thought leadership regarding their deployment.
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in establishing ETL application design standards as well as in designing and implementing such applications.
  • Deep knowledge of and experience with deploying, scheduling, and managing ETL processes.
  • Deep knowledge of and experience with the development of standards for and the implementation of data architecture in big data and data warehouse/data mart contexts.
  • DBMS knowledge (query optimization, indexing strategy, etc.) on, for example, the SAP HANA, Oracle, SQL Server, and Microsoft Azure platforms.
  • Thorough knowledge of data and process modeling using CASE tools such as ERWin or System Architect and the ability to effectively utilize tools to develop models.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with ETL application performance monitoring and management techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with ETL application testing approaches and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with data analysis techniques in a data warehousing context.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with data cleansing tools and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of and experience with approaches for deploying vendor-provided analytic solutions (for example, from Oracle or other vendors).
  • Ability to design and deploy security models at both in a DBMS and in an ETL tool.
  • Ability to provide technical support for Master Data Management and Data Governance initiatives (e.g., metadata management, data profiling and data quality assessment)
  • Ability to manage in a complex project environment characterized by multiple, competing/shifting priorities.
  • Ability to effectively motivate BIA services team members.
  • Effective knowledge of data asset life cycle management approaches.
  • Effective knowledge of overall BI-specific project governance and delivery methodology including Agile development methods and techniques and other Project management techniques.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Gas Utility Operations solutions such as ESRI GIS, Gas SCADA, Gas Management System, Meter Reading Systems etc.
