POSITION CONCEPT 
Responsible for monitoring the corrosion level of natural gas service lines and mains, and maintaining compliance levels through the scheduling of preventive maintenance.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 
1.    Conducts CP surveys to determine areas needing further testing for the presence of corrosion. 
2.    Takes pipe to soil readings for monitoring mains/services and monitors impressed current systems.
3.    Processes required inspection records in appropriate systems. 
4.    Maintains corrosion maps (GIS) and updates digital records. 
5.    Surveys, inspects and trouble shoots corrosion related leaks and issues. 
6.    Assists other employees and is available for emergency first response call-out on a rotating or as needed basis; performs special assignments and other job duties as required. 
Note:     Will be expected to successfully complete all PQP Tasks specific to Corrosion Monitoring and Cathodic Protection (CBT Modules and Performance Evaluations) within 1 year

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Education  

Required:    High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) required.

 

Licenses/Certifications
Required:  
 

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.  
  • Must attend and pass a basic CP course (Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course or equivalent) within 2 years.  

Preferred:    NACE (National Association of Corrosion Engineers) CP Tester Certification.

Related Experience
Required:
    Minimum of 1 year of experience performing the duties and responsibilities of the Utility Technician or other equivalent natural gas work experience
Preferred:    Minimum of 2 years of direct work experience performing cathodic protection activities.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)
Required:  
 

  • Must be fully proficient in the core dimensions and in performing all duties and responsibilities of a Utility Technician.
  • Must have knowledge of basic engineering procedures and of the specific procedures related to corrosion engineering;
  • Ability to read and understand maps; Familiar with all relevant municipal, state and federal regulations.
  • Mechanical ability to operate basic testing equipment related to the specialty of corrosion engineering.
  • Must be able to operate basic computer software and update field data into a computer database or spreadsheet.
  • Must be able to perform basic math functions (add, subtract, multiply, divide, decimals, fractions).
  • Must be able to express ideas in writing.

Preferred:    

  • Minimum of 1 year performing duties of a Senior Utility Technician.
  • Knowledge of the geographic area and strong interpersonal skills.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS
Must be able to work emergency response overtime including call-out duty as business needs dictate.  Overtime work includes weekends, holidays and call-out and stand-by schedule on a rotating basis.  Must be able to respond to gas emergencies and/or business needs within divisional guidelines and work outdoors for extended periods of time.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to independently operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner.
  • Must be able to independently enter/exit a motor vehicle as required during a 8-hour shift.
  • Must be able to bend and/or stoop requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Must be able to kneel and or crouch by bending legs at knees to come to rest at knees and bending body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
  • Must be able to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to grasp/handle small hand tools and other objects by applying pressure with fingers and palms.
  • Must be able to pull, push, lift and carry objects weighing up to 100 lbs. 
  • Must have vision correctable to 20/40.
  • Must not have an average hearing loss greater than 40 decibels in the better ear at frequencies of 500, 1000 and 2000 with or without a hearing aid.
  • Must be able to smell gas odorant in normal concentrations.
  • Must be able to perform repetitive motions by extending arms and hands in any direction with substantial movement of wrists, hands and fingers.
  • Must be able to rotate and revolve body (twist) as to face in another direction.
  • Must be able to work outside for extended periods of time and in potential safety hazards.
