Placement in either level is based on skills, experience and education of the successful candidate.

 

Preferences

Successful candidate must be able to respond to emergency calls within 30 minutes of Carlsbad, NM.

 

 

Gas System Technician / Senior Gas System Technician

 

POSITION CONCEPT

The Gas System Technician performs routine measurement and pressure control, leak survey, and corrosion functions associated with the operations, quality, maintenance, and inspection of an assigned areas and the related equipment on the gas system. Diagnoses malfunctions, makes minor repairs, and replaces worn parts on transmission or distribution equipment.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (D&R)

 

Level I: Gas System Technician

Under direct supervision, may support Senior Gas System Technician with the following:

1.    Performs various measurement functions, including diaphragm, rotary, turbine, ultra-sonic, and orifice accuracy tests, changing charts, adjusting pressures, ensures and maintains proper pressure control, changing orifice plates, running dew point tests, witnessing meter tests, and completing necessary reports. Performs SCADA troubleshooting, repairs, and calibration.

2.    Designs large meter and regulator station with oversight from Engineering. Performs blow down, purging, and monitoring of transmission system.

3.    Troubleshoots and supports large customers with equipment operations.

4.    Repairs and maintains remote data transfer units, odorization equipment, meters, regulators, and relief valves.

5.    Investigates, records, and resolves gas leaks. Conducts annual leak surveys.

6.    Performs cathodic protection functions, including installation and replacement of anodes, rectifiers, and ground beds. Conducts annual cathodic protection surveys.

7.    Prepares, submits, and maintains required records for all leak and cathodic protection surveys, tests, and other related documentation in a timely and accurate manner.

8.    Depending on location, may perform initial inspection and analysis of compressor station.

9.    May perform miscellaneous duties including line locates, service, and customer service.

Level 2:    Gas System Technician Senior

Under limited supervision, provides leadership and training to Gas System Technicians and other Operations team members. Conducts on-the-job training and safety sessions with team.

1.    Performs various measurement functions, including diaphragm, rotary, turbine, ultra-sonic, and orifice accuracy tests, changing charts, adjusting pressures, ensures and maintains proper pressure control, changing orifice plates, running dew point tests, witnessing meter tests, and completing necessary reports. Performs SCADA troubleshooting, repairs, and calibration.

2.    Designs large meter and regulator station with oversight from Engineering. Performs blow down, purging, and monitoring of transmission system.

3.    Troubleshoots and supports large customers with equipment operations.

4.    Repairs and maintains remote data transfer units, odorization equipment, meters, regulators, relief valves, analyzers, and chromatographs.

5.    Investigates, records, and resolves gas leaks. Conducts annual leak surveys.

6.    Performs cathodic protection functions, including installation and replacement of anodes, rectifiers, and ground beds. Conducts annual cathodic protection surveys.

7.    Prepares, submits, and maintains required records for all leak and cathodic protection surveys, tests, and other related documentation in a timely and accurate manner.

8.    Depending on location, may perform initial inspection and analysis of compressor station.

9.    May perform miscellaneous duties including line locates, service, and customer service.

10.    Provides support in developing and monitoring operating and capital budgets.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Required
:    A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED is required.

Preferred:    Associate’s Degree or Certificate(s) in energy related discipline.

 

Licenses/Certifications

Required:    Must be able to obtain and maintain all applicable Operator Qualifications (OQs). Must at all times possess a valid driver's license and meet the acceptable driving record requirements of the Company.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS PER LEVEL

 

LEVEL 1:    Gas System Technician Licenses/Certifications
Required:    Depending upon position and/or geographic location, may be required to possess a Journeyman Gas Fitter's License.

Related Experience

Required: Minimum of 2 years of work experience related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position is required. Related experience consists of gas operations, gas compression operations, processing plant operations, or electrical and pneumatic instrumentation experience.
Preferred:    Minimum of 1 year of direct work experience performing the Duties & Responsibilities of this position is preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)

Required:    Ability to investigate, troubleshoot, diagnose, and solve mechanical and electrical problems; Technical knowledge necessary to understand and safely work with natural gas; Ability to read maps and prepare basic maps or records.

Preferred:    Knowledge of electricity, corrosion, measurement, and leak detection tasks; Knowledge of SCADA; Knowledge of gas laws; Ability to operate and maintain gas system equipment to include provers, generators, gauges, calibration equipment, multimeters, and other related test equipment.

 

LEVEL 2:    Gas System Technician Senior Licenses/Certifications
Required:    Depending upon position and/or geographic location, may be required to possess a Journeyman Gas Fitter's License.

Related Experience

Required: Minimum of 4 years of work experience related to the Duties & Responsibilities of this position is required. Related experience consists of gas operations, gas compression operations, processing plant operations, or electrical and pneumatic instrumentation experience.
Preferred:    Minimum of 3 years of direct work experience performing the Duties & Responsibilities of this position is preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSA)

Required:    Working knowledge of electricity, corrosion, measurement, and leak detection tasks; Working knowledge of SCADA; Working knowledge of gas laws; Ability to investigate, troubleshoot, diagnose, and solve mechanical problems; Ability to operate and maintain gas system equipment to include provers, generators, gauges, calibration equipment, multimeters, and other related test equipment; Technical knowledge necessary to understand and safely work with natural gas and related gas systems and facilities; Ability to read maps and prepare basic maps or records pertaining to system maintenance and compliance regulations.

Preferred:    Extensive knowledge in the above Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Working outdoors in hot, humid, wet and/or cold conditions 75% of the work day
Working overtime and/or weekends, on-call
Frequent travel within assigned area is required
May work in confined spaces (vaults or pits)
Working around high-pressure gas and pipeline-related fluids, ie. methanol, odorant, etc.
Uses self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
Standing, walking, bending, climbing 75% of the work day
Regularly driving, sitting at the wheel of a truck, 20% of the work day
Lifting 20 lbs regularly; lifting 75 lbs occasionally
